Hamilton answered the prayers of many by actually releasing the watch that played a pivotal role in the end of the movie Interstellar. Normally I would say “spoiler alert,” but the movie has been out for 10 years, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you’re at fault. Unfortunately, the original Murph had a diameter of 42mm, which was too large for some. So when Hamilton released the Murph 38mm in 2022, it was no wonder that many flocked to the new model. Two years later, just in time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of the movie Interstellar, Hamilton is refreshing its Khaki Field Murph 38mm lineup with two new models, one with a steel bracelet and one featuring a grained white dial.
Dial
Now let’s take a look at what’s new on the new Murph 38. The most eye-catching feature is the white dial with, of course, Faux Tina’s vintage-style typeface indexes. While many of the images you see depict a pure white surface, it’s actually a fine-grained texture that gives the dial its silvery sheen. To improve legibility, the Arabic numerals are outlined in black, while the hands remain silver and sometimes blend into the light-colored background. The printing on the dial also stands out more due to the black-on-white contrast compared to the black-dial model.
Speaking of the black dial, it’s exactly what you’d expect, with the warm tones of the dial print and the shape of the cathedral hands matching the color perfectly, although Interstellar fans will notice that the Morse code print on the seconds hand is exclusive to the 42mm Murph.
Bracelets and straps
New to the black dial is a steel bracelet. A steel bracelet is not typically associated with the Murph, as it originally featured a leather strap, but it makes sense given the field watch aesthetic. It’s a very simple three-link bracelet that is fully brushed except for a very small polished chamfer on the outside of the middle link.
The bracelet has a foldover push button clasp with quick release spring bars and the usual micro-adjustment holes, which require tools and unfortunately cannot be adjusted on the fly without tools.
The leather strap is the same gloss black strap as the current Murph 38mm, finished with a sturdy steel pin buckle. It’s definitely on the stiff side, taking some time to get used to, but if that bothers you, or you want to make the most of the 100m water resistance, you can easily change straps using the Murph’s 20mm lugs.
Incident
Both new models feature the same 38mm steel case that made the original Murph 38 so popular, measuring 44.7mm from lug to lug and 11.1mm thick. The dial is covered by a slightly domed sapphire crystal, while the screw-down caseback allows for viewing through mineral crystal. Brushed finishes throughout lend the watch a field watch aesthetic, and a relatively large, protruding push-pull crown helps support the aforementioned 100m water resistance.
motion
Visible through the display caseback is the Hamilton H-10 movement, beating at 3Hz and offering an 80-hour power reserve. Seasoned enthusiasts will immediately recognize it as derived from ETA’s Powermatic 80 series, made exclusively for the Swatch Group. In this case, it is based on the ETA C07.611, which has the same design as the venerable 2824.
Verdict
Is there anything I should say about the Hamilton Murph that hasn’t been said before? If, for some reason, the black dial doesn’t appeal to you or you want your Murph on a bracelet, you now have two more options that make most attempts to resist its allure futile. The Murph is one of the best examples of a brand listening and responding to its fans, and I’m glad to see more variations available now.
