The Borna Bosniak 40mm PRX Powermatic 80 features a low-profile forged carbon fiber dial and case. It retains the dimensions of the previous 40mm model but is fitted with an integrated rubber strap with quick-release tabs. Priced at $995, it is one of the most expensive PRX models in the lineup, matching the price of the carbon-cased Sideral.
Since the first PRX with its blue dial and quartz movement was released, the model has become an affordable modern icon. As you’d expect with any successful release, Tissot hasn’t rested on its laurels, exploring numerous iterations on the PRX theme, with some successes. Most recently, we’ve seen a particularly strong string of releases, starting with the metallic Grendizer limited edition and continuing with the new PRX 40 Powermatic 80 Forged Carbon.
Carbon is by no means a new watch material, but it’s rare to see it at an affordable price point, and even rarer to see it well-made at that price point. Tissot tested the material under the surface with the aforementioned Sideral, a slightly quirky, ’70s-inspired watch, and now it’s brought this high-tech material to the well-established PRX. At 40mm in diameter and 11.2mm thick, the PRX Forged Carbon is just a touch thicker than the regular Powermatic 80. Fans of the smaller-wristed 40mm PRX will be happy to hear that this new offering is offered on a rubber strap, meaning the PRX’s infamous 51mm effective lug-to-lug length is somewhat offset, allowing it to wear much closer to its actual dimensions of 44.9mm.
The use of carbon doesn’t just end with the case, it extends to the dial as well. The matte surface seems to pair well with the shiny hands and indexes, although the full legibility of this combination remains to be seen. Tissot was careful enough to color-match the date wheel to the carbon dial, but we’ll bet fans will want a no-date option, a design choice that was well-received on the Grendizer.
At first glance, the movement may appear unchanged, but there’s a little Easter egg tucked away just near the balance axis: the “Si” engraving denotes the use of silicon in this particular Powermatic 80 variant, which both differentiates it from the Sideral and helps justify its higher price over the regular automatic PRX. Aside from the improved anti-magnetic properties, other familiar features include an advertised 80-hour power reserve and a 3Hz vibration frequency.
