Mysterious shipwrecks, long-lost relics, and alternate realities are all features of Clive Cussler’s classic novel, and they’ll likely play into your imagination every time you check the time on your Doxa SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler. When the first collaboration was released last yearI had never seen anything like it. Elderly cases have been done beforeBut it’s rare to see a watch that depicts a character in such depth as the Doxa SUB 300T Clive Cussler, which has been reborn with a dark Shark Hunter dial to celebrate what would have been the late Clive Cussler’s 93rd birthday.
Incident
Clive Cussler and his fictional hero Dirk Pitt both wore the 1960s Doxa SUB 300T because that’s the quintessential 60s dive watch: colorful, quirky, cushion-cased, A modern version of the SUB 300T Wearability-wise, it’s a near-perfect reissue. While the 42.5mm diameter might sound a bit intimidating on those with smaller wrists, thanks to the cushioned shape, it’s actually only 44.5mm long lug-to-lug. The 14mm thickness matches its voluminous appeal without being over the top, and the 300m water resistance is more than enough for nearly any water-related activity.
It’s hard to miss the finish on this stainless steel case; it hasn’t actually been submerged in a coral reef for 50 years, it’s just been coated to look oxidized and distressed. The treatment is applied to all metal surfaces of the watch, making it unobstructed for submersion, but not so rough that you can’t read the decompression marks on the bezel. It takes some bravery to make a brand new watch look this old, but it seems the first model sold well enough to make a sequel; many companies Play with crazy dialsBut to change things this dramatically, serious effort is needed.
Dial
If you ever made treasure maps as a kid, singed the edges with a lighter, stained the paper with tea bags or coffee, this watch is for you. Wear and tear contributes far more to the story of age and adventure than off-white lume, and even the date window uses a parchment tone to keep the amount of clean white down. The compass rose is front and center, with thin lines extending from it reminiscent of a ship’s wheel. Each dial is hand polished, so the array of scratches and blemishes will vary from watch to watch.
Stripped of all the quirks of the Clive Cussler model, the Doxa SUB 300T stays mostly true to its roots. The white print doesn’t discolor like the Super-LumiNova, and the off-center lettering adds to the watch’s playfulness. Also, while you own this watch, you’ll notice that the numbers 7, 15, and 31 on the date wheel are in red, a reference to the author’s birthday, July 15, 1931.
bracelet
You can’t put a shiny new bracelet on a watch that looks like sunken treasure. A classic combination for divers, especially Doxa, the bead of rice bracelet looks incredibly beautiful with an antique finish that matches the case. The same goes for the clasp, with no shiny metal in sight, even when the diver extension is fully open. If you feel like you need a slightly more modern look, there is a black FKM rubber strap, but even then, the folding clasp has the shipwreck treatment. If you think you can find something that will make it even more fun to wear, the 20mm lug width allows for a lot of options. The inside of one of the lugs is also engraved with a number out of 93 to indicate that it is a limited edition.
motion
The Doxa SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler is by no means a complicated watch, so the Sellita SW200-1 is the perfect movement for it. It’s not exactly a high-end caliber, but it has proven to be a reliable and accurate movement. Like the base ETA 2824-2The watch beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the second hand moves smoothly, the date display can be quickly set with the crown, and the automatic winding system provides a 38-hour power reserve even when worn all day. The case back is screwed down and is engraved with the names of shipwrecks and artifacts discovered by NUMA. NUMA was a fictional organization that once appeared in Cussler’s books, and was founded and run by Cussler until his death in 2020.
Verdict
While I was excited about the original model, I was a little worried that it would be too niche and would never catch on. The Doxa SUB 300T Shark Hunter Clive Cussler is limited to just 93 pieces, but I’m relieved that a new model is coming soon. Doxa The limited edition will be followed by a similar standard production referenceSo it would be great to see a non-Clive Cussler line of watches adopt the same textured cases and worn dials, but as it stands, the Shark Hunter Clive Cussler is a thrilling, darker take on the first version.
